The U.S. pay-TV industry lost over 18 million subscribers between 2014 and 2020


DALLAS, July 8, 2021 / PRNewswire / – A new study from Parks Associates estimates that between 2014 and 2020, the U.S. pay-TV industry lost more than 18 million subscribers, while the broadband market accelerated, with 40% of broadband homes in the United States receiving stand-alone service. In 2020, more than seven million households abandoned their pay-TV services. Traditional pay television (television services delivered over an operator-controlled network to an operator-controlled device) has declined by around 10 million subscriptions. In the U.S. market, vMVPDs represented the only segment of the pay-TV space to experience growth during the COVID-19 pandemic. Parks Associates estimates that by 2024, the traditional pay-TV subscriber base will drop to just 53 million U.S. households, while vMVPD will grow to over 23 million.

Internet service providers and others operating in the pay-TV space are therefore looking for alternatives to traditional pay-TV in their arsenal of consumer services. Cable TV Providers in United States managed to encourage new bundles by launching Wi-Fi-first MVNO services, running primarily on the Verizon network. In the Parks Associates survey in Q1 2021, 4% of U.S. broadband households reported subscribing to Comcast Xfinity Mobile, Spectrum Mobile, or Altice Mobile, making it one of the biggest players in the industry.
