Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that Sumitomo Rubber USA will invest $ 122 million in its plant in the city of Tonawanda, which will create 30 new jobs. SRUSA’s capital investment will include major replacement and upgrades of production equipment and other equipment. The plant currently manufactures around 9,000 tires per day for cars, motorcycles, trucks and buses, and the investment will allow production to almost double to 17,500 tires per day. The facility will be 100 years old in 2022, and the modernization will solidify the long-term economic future for the tire maker in western New York.

ESD helps SRUSA purchase new mixers, tire manufacturing, drying presses and additional advanced equipment by providing up to $ 3.3 million under the Excelsior job tax credit program in exchange job creation commitments. SRUSA is one of the largest manufacturing employers in western New York City, with an average annual salary starting at $ 50,000 per year. It plans to complete the installation of the new equipment by December 2023.
