Cellphones worth $102m imported in July and August

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan imported mobile phones worth $101.864 million in the first two months (July-August) of the current financial year 2022-22 and recorded a negative growth of 64.38% compared to to $285.947 million during the same period last year.

Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) data shows that on a monthly basis (MoM), imports of mobile phones recorded a growth of 62.51% and remained at $63.060 million in August 2022, from $38.804 million. dollars in July 2022.

Mobile phone imports registered a negative growth of 62.16% on an annual basis in August 2022, compared to $166.710 million in the same month last year.

The overall telecommunications imports into the country remained at $169.438 million in the first two months of the current fiscal year 2022-2023 and registered a negative growth of 53.84% from $367.051 million during of the same period of the previous year.

However, on a year-over-year basis, Telecom as a whole recorded negative growth of 51.311% and remained at $101.537 from $208.558 million in July-August 2021-22. On a monthly basis, overall telecommunications imports recorded a growth of 49.54% and remained at $101.537 million in August 2022, compared to $67.901 million in July 2022.

Imports of other appliances remained at $67.574 million in July-August 2022 and recorded a negative growth of 16.68% compared to $81.104 million during the same period of the previous fiscal year.

On a yearly basis, other devices remained at $38.477 million in August 2022 and recorded negative growth of 8.06% from $41.848 million in August 2021 and recorded 32.24% on a MoM basis compared to $29.0097 million in July 2022

Local manufacturing plants manufactured/assembled 14.94 million telephone handsets in the first seven months (January-July) of 2022, compared to 1.16 million imported commercially, according to the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA).

Local manufacturing plants manufactured/assembled 0.86 million mobile phone handsets in July 2022.

Mobile handsets manufactured/assembled by local manufacturing plants in calendar year 2021 amounted to 24.66 million compared to 13.05 million in 2020, an increase of 88%.

Commercial imports of mobile phone handsets stood at 10.26 million in 2021 from 24.51 million in 2020, official PTA data showed.

The 14.94 million locally manufactured/assembled mobile phones include 8.6 million 2G phones and 6.33 million smartphones.

Furthermore, according to PTA data, 54% of mobile devices are smartphones and 46% 2G on the Pakistani network.
