Ali, a 22-year-old third-year engineering student from Ambur near Tirupattur, was arrested by Intelligence Bureau (IB) officials in the early hours of Saturday on suspicion of having terrorist links.

Intelligence sources said the student was residing across the street from Neelikollai Mosque in Ambur. He was picked up from his home by IB agents with the assistance of state intelligence units – Q Branch and SB-CID – at approximately 3:30 a.m. The team searched his home for 30 minutes, seized his laptop, two cell phones and other electronic gadgets. , and took him to Anaicut police station in Vellore, about 65 km from Ambur.

He was interrogated on the first floor of the police station under tight security. Initial inquiries revealed that Ali was pursuing engineering studies at a private college near Arcot. His father works abroad and he stays with his mother in the city.

It was said that Ali had recently shared messages and photos, which were shared by banned Islamic organizations on their websites, on his Instagram page and other social media platforms. This caught the attention of national intelligence agencies. Sources said the student’s detention was to investigate his role in supporting these banned organisations. The questioning was ongoing, they added.
